st. Francis manner and ceylon Park are a community within a community gaining its start as a long-term care facility in 1977 st. Francis Manor a community nonprofit has expanded immensely to accommodate the changing needs of the people it serves every family that becomes part of the community is met with st. Francis manners deeply rooted tradition of care that tradition goes back to st. Francis Hospital owned and operated by the sisters of st. Francis beginning in 1919 at the same location i was born in 1923 and i was a preemie weighed three and a half pounds so sister Margaret Mary would Terra carry me around on a pillow and show me to everybody because I was little see I was born at st. Francis Hospital and throughout I had my tonsils taken out there as a child and various things normal things that children go through so yes I have a long history with st. Francis and remember the hospital very well st. Francis Hospital merged with the community hospital in 1968 to form Grinnell general hospital now known as the Grinnell Regional Medical Center after the merger the st. Francis Hospital building was torn down and in 1977 st. Francis Manor a community nonprofit long-term care facility was built on the site of the former hospital over the years Saint Francis Manor has continued to meet the changing healthcare needs of Grinnell and surrounding communities starting out as a long-term care facility with 51 beds it is since expanded to become a 78 bed skilled healthcare center it now provides skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services as well as long-term nursing and restorative care between 2010 and 2013 a five and a quarter million dollar construction and renovation project was undertaken this resulted in a rehabilitation clinic for in and outpatient therapy services a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen and additional dining room administration offices and conference rooms the entire facility was also updated including all 50 resident rooms in the 1980's st. Francis Manor recognized a growing need for an independent senior living community st. Francis Manor began acquiring additional land and in 1989 construction began on the first of six development phases the campus has grown to 31 acres and is known as seelam park named in honor of dixieland a long time st. Francis manner and ceylon park board member ceylon parts ground level residents has ranged from apartments to single-family homes and provide residents a maintenance-free lifestyle with the completion of phase six featuring single-family homes with two or three car garages Sealand park will include 150 independent living residences in 2007 community services of st. Francis was developed to provide affordable private home health care services to individuals needing either short-term or long-term assistance to continue meeting the health care needs of individuals within its service area st. Francis banner plans to add a two-story 20 unit assisted living community to its campus the Hammond Center for assisted living will be named in honor of Bonnie and Betty Hammond former and current board members of the st. Francis manner foundation projected to open in january of 2018 the Hammond Center will complete st. Francis manners continuum of care well that was a surprise when they named it that and we needed we need it really very badly because there's so many people that are really able to take care of their self but yet they need help well the land that we're on is always being used for health care for the community and it's always been a community owned facility and so we've kept that tradition going first with the nursing facility and we expanded and also we did the vet ceylon park the retirement housing which is 137 units and then we start our community service home health care where we do home health care here at Sealand park and off campus and so all the things we try to do is to to serve the community and and help people st. Francis manor is continuing a long legacy of care the sisters of st. Francis cared for the community through their work at st. Francis Hospital and today in the same location st. Francis manner ceylon park and the upcoming Hammond center continue this tradition of meeting the health care needs of grinnell and surrounding communities so i guess i'm home i was born here and now i'm probably gonna die here so but i like it here very much take good place to be

you it really is a community within a community it's very friendly and we we've met a lot of new friends we can go for coffee we want enjoy our own hobbies and do a lot of things together yet to and enjoy the people out here ceylon park and st. Francis manor is a continuing care retirement community part of the reason I moved here four years ago was because I wanted to have the maintenance-free lifestyle not have to mow lon shovel snow worry about appliances going bad and having to replace them I am already thinking towards my future and when I want to be able to retire or work part-time and travel and I won't have to make a move then I won't have to make that decision in my mind I'm set for the rest of my life here we've got the independent living community and we've got the skilled nursing facility and long-term care but there are times when some one needs something in between we've recognized for some time that an assisted-living component was the one thing we were missing you know we don't just get old all at once we don't lose the ability to take care of ourselves just overnight it's a gradual process assisted living has been established as a excellent transition from retirement homes to nursing facilities and in our community we need an additional step for this transitional care and that's where assisted living fills in that gap the gap between living at home with some home health care versus going into the nursing home well the human Center would have a lot to offer some people may just need help doing some of their activities of daily living such some people might just need help with showers or meal meal planning meal prepping that sort of thing so they would be able to have that little bit of assistance I have several times over this past year working here had to turn families away either residents of st. Francis residents of ceylon park and even off-campus residence and tell them that no we don't provide that level of care here you're going to have to go somewhere else so having that area that they would be able to transition to would be a lot easier and provide that quality of care they wouldn't have to leave and go someplace else my father passed away first and my mother had some needs and dementia issues so I without an assisted living area here I was not able to bring her here I had to take her to another place and and it you know she was okay but I I would have felt better if she'd been closer and I would have been able to oversee a little more of her care I think being able to stay in a familiar place for as long as possible its key for the residents quality of life and just maintaining confidence in themselves the Hammond center would have tremendous amount of benefits to this community not only ceylon park in st. Francis manner but the entire Grinnell community and surrounding areas we really feel that people were going to help mainly is going to be the people in the community brooklyn and mon ism and in gilman in other places because those communities don't have an assisted living they don't have that and they'll be able to come here and so the Hammond center is to do two things the assisted living but also make our amenities nicer for our customers of the future and our customers now have like a walking track exercise area we have a really good parkett dance group and so they could have a room to dance and people could do other aerobic exercises and the main thing is that I'm excited to have an assisted living for the people that need it and i wish i would have had it for my mother she was cared for and such but I'd liked having her close by just the time I've been here a lot of the folks in the ceilin park area have needed that next step before they maybe eventually would end up in the nursing home and I think they would be happy to have that you you
