The Green Houses at Traceway

[Music] place in which frail elders coming real at home and we're able almost incidentally to provide the medical care and treatment that they need for the rest of their lives I just love it I don't want to have to I hope I never have to leave it it's such a wonderful easy life and a beautiful life all these surroundings that could just send to go smoothly somehow just flow in the summer of Mississippi Methodist Senior Services sparked a revolution to change the face of elder care in America the greenhouse is that trace way open their doors to a group of pioneering elders who eagerly treated institutional living for a comfortable new home the traditional system is broken and it has to be replaced you can't do enough tinkering on that system because it's designed to give you the results that you get and the results are results that nobody is proud of and in the United States of America we can continue to consistently institutionalize only two groups of people are convicted felons and our frail elders so this project is about letting the elders be free each greenhouse is home to 10 or 12 elders living in individual rooms encircling a common heart area and kitchen the elders enjoy the privacy of their personalized room complete with baths but are also able to join in the community of the heart that lies right outside their bedroom door so one of the big reasons that the rims are located around this hearth area has to do with travel distance it's the short travel distance that gives the elder the opportunity to take themselves out into the heart of activity that's going on whether that be dining cooking or this life going on in the living room of the heart it's just nice to have your own bathroom in in your room you know and there's just so many things that just really nice about it it's like being at home you know what's special about the greenhouse though is that it's the place where elders come and live and thrive and flourish where we protect sustain and nurture them anything that went in the house would ask ourselves would you have that in your home and if you wouldn't we got rid of it so we avoided any temptations to bring anything from the institution like medicine carts or you know whatever it may be to getting back to the question of would you have that in your home developed by dr. william thomas and rooted in the tradition of the Eden Alternative the greenhouse philosophy of living departs from typical long-term care by eliminating large nursing facilities and creating small habilitative social settings dave McClure here at Methodist Senior Services got to know Bill Thomas at a workshop on those teaching the philosophy of the email turn ative which essentially says that elders deserve to have autonomy dignity and choice no matter where they're living the effect upon the elders was almost immediate appetites improved interactions increased life began to return as they gratefully realized they had come home and when we move those first elders into the door we knew it was right and the first elders that came in were from a secure all genres unit and within hours of being in the greenhouse their life was transformed you see the person that's alive in those eyes again it's not just it's not just existence it's living a first day in one house old 10 elders went out on the patio and we couldn't get them to come back in it had been so long since I've been outdoors we went to Walmart and got sun hat and sunscreen and brought them lemonade well we have a lot of fun you know at the table when we get through eating we sit around and talk and enjoy each other it's just really nice my phone had me moved out here when I told him I don't move to greenhouse his eyes he comes over resume oorah to start packing or so besides its innovative layout and concept the greenhouse is distinct from other institutions as a result of the special people who work there in a greenhouse the elders are placed in the care of Chavez een specially trained caregivers who embrace a role that far surpasses the standard nursing assistant and you know this Shabazz are so friendly with the folks and so helpful with the folks it and they just love them and I think the elders love them too and so that makes it more of a home atmosphere and they can they have their ever need taken care of they're kinda h1m and they give up you to tell against giving special attention that's what we all need well they're all great it is really good and good to us exclusively to try to meet everyone our needs and they really do the tender love and care they give us I've never had so much care and they just want they just want to do it all for you and come to the room when you call them and they just like one big family for those that work here with seen an incredible transformation in their lives personal growth things like an elder is showing of Shabazz how to cook a cake from scratch and she goes home and cooks that cake has a birthday party for a five-year-old son who had never had a birthday cake before the Shabba zine tend to the complete needs at the elder from cooking to laundry to dressing and more they're empowered to be to deliver this as they would to their mother and in fact that this wonderful warm relationship between the the Shabazz and the elder is it has to translate and obviously does translate into a great feeling for that elder and for the shahboz the shop azeem work alongside the nurses and other medical staff in a mutually beneficial relationship elders received total care at all times we tried to project to the shop by saying that the nurse was like your best friend coming over that they have skills and tools that you need and that they weren't too boss then they shot Leslie morning the nurses are wonderful they do everything they can help us well we need known the nurses soon it's just like you're about just a family here it's like leaving home coming to home we got a bunch of grandmothers now here I can know to deal with them and I just wanted from I don't be upset I get to work I do I know somebody here don't say something make it all right the attachment between elders and shabba theme is mutual rizal was the one that came in here while ago she can't leave me she is wonderful elders make you want to come to work every day to because they're lots of fun to work with in you know they tell us stories about their lives they've become amazing people just absolutely amazing people we believe that probably we're amazing all alone but they were as Natalie Cochran our vice president for development says they were just stuck in jobs that were smaller than they were and once we put them in this place of responsibility and trust they have just risen just become amazing people the initial greenhouses were so successful that the management staff and board of directors felt it was imperative to quickly build six additional units alongside the original for the immediate goal is to transfer all trace lasers in traditional institutional care to their new homes in the greenhouses true miracles have happened twin when you get in a setting that everybody is sitting around a table just like you would at home and eating and you have your own room and it doesn't smell sterile like most nursing facilities have to smell and you smelled us at cooking baking bread baking and desserts and and it just opens up people and gives them an opportunity to have a life it's in their latter years that they would not have had an abnormal nursing home the revolution is spreading from Tupelo Mississippi across our nation and around the world the goal is to transform traditional elder care by embracing home and honoring life we think it's the defining model for the future of elder care in America and they're probably someone that comes along and does some things that can improve on what we did and that's great we just wanted to get people to think outside the box and instead of trying to be the best within the system let's ask ourselves how do we really reinvent the system degree to create a model of eldercare that'll be the future for generations to come and so I believe we've we've changed long-term care and I think that we're at the tipping point I think that we have lots of early adopters 15 organizations across America who have been here who's seen what's happening in say I want to do this to and from those 15 there will be 15 more and 30 and pretty soon there'll be a green house in the neighborhood near you I'll just hope that when I'm at a stage and phase in my life if I'm blessed to make it that many years that that I'll have an opportunity to to live as a resident in in a green house sitting well it took my breath really it was so beautiful in that I really do love it here I love it how much you love well Adam all they were moving in or [Music] you [Music] you

who is Methodist Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services born from the desire to put hands to God's Ministry of caring for his elder children this faith-based not-for-profit organization was established in 1962 and Tupelo Mississippi through its mission to serve older adults in the spirit of Christian love Methodist Senior Services provides a variety of senior living options across the state of Mississippi its community's focus on comfort and affordability while leading the physical social and spiritual needs of older adults it is Christian love that inspires her staff and volunteers to do whatever it takes to answer God's call to serve Mississippi's elders in a 10th chapter of Luke Jesus gives us a model for how we care for the elders most people know that burst and that parable is the parable of the Good Samaritan where Jesus teaches about the answer to the question who is our neighbor but there's an often overlooked verse in there in verse 35 in which the Good Samaritan takes the injured man to the end and gives the innkeeper some money gives him all the money that he has and says take care of him and bring him back to health and if this is not enough money when I come back I'll pay you in full we see that as a vision for our mission that same services to do whatever it takes to provide quality affordable living options for our seniors to be innovative in what we do to go the Second Mile we don't just give them a place to stay in a room we come back to check on and we continue to find ways to do whatever it takes I am Methodist senior services I am Methodist senior services I am Methodist senior services knowing their work as a ministry and not just a job the employees of Methodist Senior Services do things differently from the way the rest of the world does them the organization's core values recognize its servant ministry by placing the dignity of elders and a compassion for those she serves above all else our work is a sacred work in a sacred calling and because of that we demand excellence among our employees because what we do is too important settle for anything less that is why MSS is innovative Nature has led the nation in the development of nuclear concepts like the green house homes which deinstitutionalized nursing home life and provides a warm green and smart environment where loneliness helplessness and boredom is eliminated that is just one example of how Methodist Senior Services has changed the face of elder care in Mississippi I am Methodist Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services methods Senior Services as a not-for-profit corporation what that means is we are not in business to make a profit we are in business to serve seniors to serve seniors at a reasonable cost and an affordable cost for the average Mississippian our profits are invested in our residents and in the services that we provide MSS actively invites its volunteers and donors to become involved in its ministry by contributing both time and resources to the betterment of its campuses as good stewards Methodist Senior Services emphasizes our more with less pen tality among its workers and has been able to leverage the resources God has provided to get the most water elders its 12 locations around the state are well-known as the leaders in retirement living not just in Mississippi but across the south as a faith-based not-for-profit we step out on faith knowing that God will provide and that which we do and as we so often find in our faith we don't always know where it is that God is leading us we don't always understand the challenges and sometimes why those challenges but as we step in faith we know that God will provide God will provide the dollars that are necessary and the way God provides those dollars that are necessary for our work is through the people that he replaces before us the folks at MSS don't cut corners when it comes to their residents that's just not who they are when the need arises the staff does everything it can to meet that need I am Methodist Senior Services I am Beth - Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services Methodist Senior Services is also honest and ethical in all of her dealings the MSS employees hold themselves to God's standards and not just federal and state laws that's why staff members are often found going beyond the call of duty to care for the elders everybody you know they're here to help you they're always willing to come when you need them isn't it next best thing that that we have seen that other than being able to stay at home Methodist Senior Services places her highest value on people the residents family members staff and vendors it's the people who make up Methodist Senior Services buildings and cash are important resources that help us do the job but it's our investment in people and relationships that set us apart I am Methodist Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services I am Methodist Senior Services most importantly Methodist Senior Services has never turned aside from its vision to make Mississippi the best place in our country to grow the world's changing health care is growing Doug and in complex ways economic climates are uncertain but the thing that's constant is the need for quality affordable care and senior housing options for the elders and Methodist Senior Services were committed they ought to providing that no matter what climate is no matter how complex the healthcare issues are for over 50 years Methodist Senior Services has made elder care its primary ministry by providing options for independent and assisted living 24-hour skilled nursing care innovated greenhouse homes and community outreach programs recent additions to campus life include on-site pharmacy and therapy services MSS continues to foster new ideas to make daily living easier and more satisfying for its residents by doing the right thing for our elders by following God's mission our ministry will flourish who is Methodist Senior Services it's a dedicated group of people residents employees volunteers and donors all committed to serving older adults in the spirit of Christian love by daily carrying out John Wesley's charge to do all the good you can by all the means you can in all the ways you can in all the places you can at all the times you can to all the people you can as long as every you can Methodist's senior services celebrating 50 years of ministry and beyond
