moving out of one's home into a senior living community can be one of the most important decisions a person can make many people like the benefits of living at home such as gardening or enjoying an evening out on the patio but don't want the demands of maintaining a home for these folks Phyllis st. Benedict offers a vibrant alternative located in Lisle Illinois the Arboretum village this expansive senior community offers diverse opportunities to enjoy nature and achieve an enhanced quality of life join us as we learn about the important role villa st. Benedict played in Liles history and how nature can inspire and energize people throughout their lives hello my name is Judy strong and I'm the community relations liaison here at villa st. Benedict welcome to our campus we are located in Lisle at the corner of maple and the athlete and across the street from st. procopius Abbey Benedictine University and Bennett Academy you may know this corner as the Catholic four corners and we are proud to be part of the Benedictine tradition here in Lisle let me take you back to a time when the Benedictine sisters of the Sacred Heart first came out to this area it was 1912 the sisters had been living in Chicago amidst lots of noise and dust and they were looking for a place that would be tranquil and serene and a place that would offer them quiet reflection and and a place to pray so they follow the Benedictine men we come out to mile to found the college there was lots of farmland available at the time and there was even a train stop for the burlington railroad and Lisle Sacred Heart convent witches in the background here was opened in 1912 and started with sixty three sisters twelve novices and fourteen candidates part of the property was a and seventy-six acre farm called bana Dale and the sisters being city girls learned what farming was all about they had farm animals like chickens and ducks they actually plucked those chickens and made their own feather pillows they had a vegetable garden they had grapevines they had an apple orchard and they also had a herd of cattle and this operational firm stayed in existence till the late 1950s at that time the village of Lyle was in need of a space to build a school so been a Dale farm was closed and the sisters sold the property in 1920 st. Scholastica Cemetery was blessed and it is a tranquil spot close to nature where the deceased sisters are now buried in 1926 the sister started Sacred Heart Academy which was in the original convent and it opened with a class of 25 students it was a boarding school for girls and continued until 1967 when Bennett Academy then opened in 1930 an addition was put on to the convent for the Academy it was in a modified English Georgian style and the cost during the Depression was a mere fifty dollars also at the same time a renaissance Chapel was added to the Academy for the sisters and today our residents enjoy Sacred Heart Chapel in attending daily Mass seventy-five years later the chapel was rededicated in also saw a grotto being constructed it was designed by the sisters and is patterned after the Lord's grotto in France life continued for many years and in 1978 the sisters decided to expand their mission and start to care for seniors so in 1987 in the former Academy building they opened Queen of Peace Center which became home to 32 seniors in 1987 later in 2003 in keeping with the Benedictine tradition of hospitality the sisters vision and strategic plan gave us villa st. Benedict as we know it today there are seniors who make their home here some live independently in our villa homes others live independently in our four-story Villa Center the former Academy and Queen of Peace Center is now called been a Dale Center for assisted living and memory care for over a hundred years the sisters legacy has been a part of the village of Lyell and it continues today with Villa Saint Benedict join us now as we take a walking tour of our beautiful campus hello my name is Rob and I'll be giving you a ground tour of villa st.
