what once started as a small cottage for seniors in Washington DC is now a family of retirement communities and services located in Maryland and Virginia our mission began in 1890 when Sarah uh dermal answered the Evangelical Lutheran churches call to help create support for aging seniors she donated 27 acres of land so the first national Lutheran home could be built at 18th and Douglas streets northeast the first residents were welcomed in 1895 while our heritage is rooted in the lutheran expression of faith we welcome seniors of all beliefs and backgrounds little did Sarah know she started the first chapter of a storied legacy that would come to serve seniors for 125 years as our DC location grew and expanded several times it was time for the ministry to write its next chapter in 1980 the national Lutheran home relocated to Rockville Maryland and built a 300 bed skilled nursing facility that later added more services to become a continuing care retirement community in 2008 the organization again changed creating a parent corporation that assumed the organization's founding name the national Lutheran Home for the Aged in 2009 the ministry once again answered the call to meet the needs of seniors this time in the Commonwealth of Virginia 132 acres of land was purchased to build another retirement community the village at Orchard Ridge in Winchester Virginia to spearhead the initiatives of the growing ministry the Board of Trustees appointed Larry Bradshaw as the organization's first chief executive officer in marked our and twentieth anniversary and to commemorate new logos and names were unveiled these changes reflected the expansion of growth and future services to come the parent corporation of national Lutheran Home for the Aged became national Lutheran communities and services while our flagship retirement community became the village at Rockville a national Lutheran Community in 2011 we welcomed a new community into our family the legacy at North Augusta in Staunton Virginia that same year we announced plans for a community integrated retirement concept in Annapolis Maryland called the village at Crystal Spring in February of 2013 the village at Orchard Ridge opened and welcomed its first residents only a year later in 2014 we launched our first homecare agency called my potential at home national Lutheran continues to write the chapters that will prepare the organization for another 125 years while seniors needs will continue to change one thing remains constant our unchanging values join us as we celebrate serving seniors for 125 years
