Another survey reached out to 1058 people and found that 13.1% had used generative AI for mental health advice. Such widespread adoption is indicative of the value AI brings in helping us with our mental well-being when human support may be less accessible. But the real question is whether it’s safe and reliable.
Rise of AI in Mental Health Care
From an empathetic ear to assisting users with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, AI-powered apps such as Woebot, Replika, or Wysa are gaining great attention. These chatbots are designed to text with users, offer personalized advice, and provide emotional support. For some people, this may feel like a lifeline, particularly when they are dealing with anxiety, depression, or loneliness.
Yet, there have been potential concerns about AI’s ability to empathize. The fact is, AI’s comprehension of human feelings doesn’t come from how we intimately connect with another human being. Although the latest AI chatbots can simulate empathy, they can’t have the emotional depth of another human being.

Both teens engaged in extended conversations with AI chatbots that not only discouraged the teens from seeking help from their parents but also offered to write a suicide note.
When AI is used at its best, it becomes helpful. It can provide support for the everyday struggles of life, share resources, and help users manage stress. But it is not ready for high-risk scenarios. AI models answer questions in probabilistic terms, but are not able to evaluate the subtleties of a mental health crisis.
A 2026 report from ECRI identified the ‘Misuse of AI Chatbots’ as the number one health tech hazard category of the year. The worries of AI’s inability to sense nuance in emotional tone top the list. It can’t detect the signals that someone is in a depressive or psychotic state. They are there to not only listen, but to comprehend, to empathize, and guide people through their darkest stretches.
The human aspect of counselors is also necessary for providing accountability. The goal isn’t to get a person feeling better in the moment but to help them live more happily overall.
AI tools have become part of our daily lives, but their role in providing mental health therapy is still questionable.
