[Music] the people that are your neighbors here they become your family and the longer you're here the more friends you get well I think one of the advantages here right now for us independently is making so many friends and as we get more feeble and we need to move into assisted living we'll have friends that will probably move along with us because there will be here and it's sort of the community goes with you and we really like that feeling to know that we won't be all alone I would describe it as one of the most welcoming places I've ever been a part of it is a place where people belong where people feel connected with one another I think the faith basis is a primary reason why why our residents in particular are drawn here they recognize not just from a moral value but from a deep spiritual sense they want to have a connection so covenant retirement communities really was birthed out of a vision from the evangelical covenant church in 1886 and they opened the home of mercy and it was in the city in the city of Chicago covenant retirement communities today has grown to the 15 communities that it is and one of the commitments that was made many many years ago is that covenant retirement communities would have a retirement community in every Conference of the evangelical covenant church and so as individuals move in and they look at the financial security of that individual community well that's extremely important they also have the assurance that they have a backup from the larger organization in the event of access to funds to do new development or in the event that that community would be challenged financially they know that their investment in covenant retirement communities is safe [Music] we can rest on central office resources as far as everything from nursing services to the software that we utilize to finance Human Resources we have a central office that can help to communicate and to coordinate we have a lot of interaction with other campuses as well and so we can learn those campuses that have faced challenges or that have great successes the Covenant communities have been a part of this Turlock area a since I believe the 1920s but we've been on this campus since 1977 parts of our campus have been built since that time the town center in which we're sitting was completed in 2007 but other parts of the campus were built back in the 70s 80s and 90s we have about 320 residents that we serve on in all levels of care about 240 of those in the residential living and about 40 to 50 in both our assisted living in our skilled nursing we have about 150 employees all together serving those folks well before we came we thought while we can we're independent we can take care of our cleaning and our cooking and all of that but that comes as part of the apartment after we got here and I experienced it I was thinking what was I thinking I love going out to eat every day and there's no worry about maintaining a house and repairs and all that stuff because it's all part of your living down here it's taken care of we're directly across the street from the primary hospital Medical Center in the area many of the personal physicians the dentists and other folks that are residents utilize as for services are within a block or two of where we are we're just about 90 miles from Yosemite to the east we're about 90 miles from Sacramento to the north we're about 90 miles from the Bay Area to the west and so that you know that's drivable there's many activities that you can take advantage of at your disposal whatever you want you just sign up for it and they're at your disposal you can be as busy as you want really amenities are close by shopping what we need is here Turlock has an abundance of churches to choose from golf courses are around I like to play golf four times a week we love the staff we just you know we'll see them in the dining room and give the server's a hug and you know ask how they're doing and what's going on in their lives and they're the same way they agreed us really friendly and enjoy you know serene us yes their employees yes they get paid but I have never had a negative interaction with everything from facilities to housekeeping to management to administration they really care about what they do and it shows it's where to serve as our customer service program our customer service philosophy really reinforces the type of community that we've had we focus on what we call our common purpose which is we create joy and peace of mind for our residents and their families by providing a better way of life and that that really is something that that spreads across all of our employees in the way that they do their job every time I see a residents smile every time I see a residents family members smile seeing them thrive in all dimension is a wellness spiritual emotional intellectual social physical wellness st. just seeing them thrive really inspires me definitely there's a lot of trust they that just goes back to the culture of the community we learn to trust and respect each other mutually and they understand that what we do here is to be the benefit and we're here to help them and anything that we can do then we will well I love people and I've loved I've been in sales for 30 plus years and so being here and working with these people that are so precious and they've become my friends and so I do think that my gift is hospitality and so I think I'm in the right spot I think so much of my passion derives from seeing them become excited about re-engaging in life and finding out or discovering what their interests are now that they have time I would say make the decision before you have to have it made for you don't wait come come early so you can take advantage of all the activities and the trips and everything that's going on make the decision while you're young while you can enjoy it you won't come too soon [Music] you believe in the power of Christian community is really a summary statement of our full mission I have watched people who have come into our organization either as a resident or as a staff member who have not had an acid-based journey and because of their experience they've turned their lives over to Christ and that's the beauty of being a ministry of the evangelical covenant church I felt that we really grew to believe that this was the best move we could make at the time I felt like I belong right in the very beginning I knew people before I moved in here because of living in the area and the church here but I've made many new friends we had a tragedy in our family and we had an awful lot of love and support and caring from people here phone calls and cars and flowers and many things like that people really reached out people really appreciated loving caring spirit that's on the campus throughout staff and even other residents as they get to experience life that a covenant retirement community overwhelmingly people embrace that is really what makes a special and unique hospitality individuality congeniality and spirituality are really the core pieces of what build christian community and those are the areas where we put our focus covenant retirement Kunis is based upon the Christian principles and the fact that we're here not only living for ourselves but we're here living to help others we studying faith-based books interesting the background of people and how they contribute I found that a growing experience living here we're not living in the past but we're just actively improving our lives and their walk with God somebody might say what did your kids think about you coming here and I say I didn't ask them but they were very supportive of my coming here I feel coming here has been a gift to our four children they do not have to worry about us they're happy that we're here and that's a big bonus tres people come here to live age is completely irrelevant in looking back on life and seeing where God's direction was evidence maybe at the time I didn't see a great vision but now having come here I can look back that God hand was in it and it was the right thing for us it's about watching whether residents or staff blossom into something that they never thought was possible it's about the people that's why I love what I do you
