Heritage Home for Women is a pleasing assisted living community in Schenectady, New York. It is within delightful Schenectady County which is part of the Empire State.
Three years after the end of the Civil War, in 1868, Schenectady residents recognized the need for a caring environment for older women. To that end, an organization, known as the “Haven of Rest” was formed.
The original location of the residence was on Green Street, in the heart of the Stockade area. In 1901, the name changed to the “Old Ladies Home” and in 1905, the present home at 1519 Union Street was opened to accommodate 43 women and a round-the-clock staff.
One hundred years after its founding, in 1968, the name was changed again to “Heritage Home for ‘Women”. At present, the Home reaches full capacity at 36 residents. The Home is owned and operated by a Board of Trustees under the rules and regulations of the New York State Department of Health.
