VANESSA: AND THE ANIMALS, LIKE STEFANI, AREN'T JUST HERE RANDOMLY. THEY'RE PART OF A PREFERENCE-BASED LIVING PROGRAM. >> WE THOUGHT, WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO SORT OF SAY, HEY, FOR RESIDENTS THAT HAVE A PREFERENCE FOR ANIMALS, LIKE PETS, THIS WOULD BE A GREAT OPTION FOR THEM. VANESSA: ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR SUZANNE HOUSE HAD ALREADY NOTICED RESIDENTS MISSING THEIR FURRY FRIENDS, SO IT WAS THE PERFECT FIT. >> THEIR EYES LIT UP, AND SMILES, AND THEY HELD OUT THEIR HANDS SO THEY COULD TAKE THE DOG, CAT, THE PET AND JUST LOVE ON IT. VANESSA: PREFERENCE-BASED LIVING ALSO INCLUDES CARDS EACH RESIDENT CARRIES THAT HELP GUESTS, GERONTOLOGY STUDENTS, AND FELLOW RESIDENTS MAKE CONVERSATION. >> IT SAYS WHAT I LIKE TO DO, WHAT CHURCH I ATTEND, AND WHAT I LIKE TO WATCH ON TV, AND I LIK CHANNEL 5 NEWS. VANESSA: THE CARDS, THE ANIMALS, AND THE RESEARCH ALL HELP THE RESIDENTS HAVE A BETTER CONNECTION TO THE STAFF, AND TO THEIR FAVORITE THINGS.
