Skincare Dos For Aging Skin

Keeping skin firm, supple, and young-looking is a priority among many people. In fact, spending on anti-aging products has been steadily rising as recent figures indicate that the anti-aging market will be worth more than $119 billion by 2030. Though it may be difficult-- and costly-- to turn back the hands of time, there are things that an older adult can do to keep skin healthy and looking vibrant with each passing year. Here's a practical guide on how to properly care for aging skin so you can age gracefully and beautifully.

Use Sunscreen With a High SPF

Research shows that using sunscreen regularly can help to slow down skin aging, but very few older adults make it a habit to use one everyday. According to the CDC, only 15% of seniors and less than 10% of sun-sensitive older adults regularly use sun protection. Moreover, 47% of older women say that staying in the shade is enough to prevent sunburn. It's important to know that frequent sun exposure not only causes fine lines and aging, but it also increases the risk of getting skin cancer.

Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, even if you're just spending a few minutes in the garden. If you dislike the sticky feel of regular sunscreen, don't fret. There are non-greasy and non-sticky sunscreens out there that have a watery, almost gel-like feel to them so you're more inclined to use them frequently. Japanese and Korean sunscreens tend to have this type of watery texture, and they're usually formulated with SPF 50. They're also readily available in stores and online shops, so try a few to see which ones you like.

Moisturize Frequently

Skin tends to get thinner and dryer as we age, so moisturizing should be a priority to keep skin looking firm, supple, and healthy. Make sure to use a facial moisturizer, body lotion, and a nourishing lip balm after every shower or bath, and use them at least twice a day. For caregivers and family members caring for older adults, ensure that your loved ones always have these items on hand and remind them to use these products daily. You can also swap out everyday items, such as soaps and body wash, with ones that contain moisturizers to ensure that your loved one's skin is hydrated even if they forget to put on lotion or moisturizer.

Practice a Healthy Lifestyle

Getting wrinkles and age spots is inevitable, and some people start getting them at the age of 40. However, there are ways to keep them at bay a little longer and even improve or reduce their appearance if you already have them. Avoiding tanning beds can help to prevent skin discoloration, while applying aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, or licorice extract can help to lighten age spots. Meanwhile, you can prevent and improve wrinkles by getting enough sleep, not smoking, limiting your alcohol intake, and eating healthy anti-aging foods such as papaya, blueberries, spinach, avocado, and broccoli, among others. Keeping a positive outlook in life and finding ways to stay happy and cheerful can also do wonders for your complexion.

Keeping skin healthy and protected is essential at any age. Consider these tips to keep aging skin looking its best year after year. For serious skin problems, consult a dermatologist.
