Three Tips For Seniors Who Enjoy Socializing Outside The Home

At present, it’s unclear just how much socializing will be allowed in this upcoming festive season. It is, however, looking as though it will be a vast improvement on last year. What’s more, 2022 should be even better. With that in mind, here are three tips for seniors who (still) enjoy socializing outside of the home.

Dress for the occasion

Up until fairly recently, the fear of having a “little accident” put many seniors off socializing outside the home. Fortunately, this issue has now been addressed. Solutions such as Attends underwear and/or discrete but effective liners/pads have been game-changers. Thanks to them, seniors can now enjoy the same sorts of activities as younger people.

The importance of a good base layer doesn’t stop at preventing accidents. Seniors often feel the cold more than younger people. It doesn’t matter if it’s snow or AC, it can still be chilly. So, if in doubt, reach for sweat-wicking thermals. These do a great job of keeping you comfortable at hot and cold temperatures. What’s more, there are lots of great options to choose from.

Get a smart hearing aid

You may already have a smart hearing aid but you may not have realized it. Even if you have, you may never have really explored what a smart hearing aid can do. A smart hearing aid can connect to a smartphone. This means that you can use it with an app and this can open up all kinds of possibilities.

For example, you can set up different profiles for different environments (e.g. in the street versus in a restaurant). You can also connect easily to assistance systems (such as audio induction loops) and to audio devices (including TVs and music players). It’s also a convenient way to fine-tune your hearing aid’s settings.

If you are going into any sort of environment where there is likely to be water (including sweat), then remember to take appropriate care of your hearing aid. You may need to take it out for a while. If you regularly go into wet environments (or keep very active), then you might want to get a waterproof hearing aid and a dehumidifying case for it.

Take care of your eyecare

Most seniors wear eyeglasses, contact lenses, or a combination of both. Whatever eyecare you use, it’s important to take proper care of it. If you use contact lenses, you should get care instructions with them. Make sure you keep on top of these, even when you’re out and about.

If you use eyeglasses, you may need to swap between different pairs. For example, you might need prescription sunglasses for the outdoors and regular eyeglasses for indoors. This means that you need to have at least one hard case with you for the pair you’re not wearing. Always put the eyeglasses in the case with the lenses facing upwards.

Never leave your eyeglasses anywhere hot, particularly not near a window, mirror, or car dashboard. The heat can damage them and reflective surfaces will magnify it. It’s best to keep them with you. That way they’re both safe and accessible.
