[Music] we've had many a friend over the years say you got to come someday we're here and we love it and don't wait too long because if you wait too long you won't be able to enjoy it there is a different atmosphere in this place a more warm and welcoming interactive relationship than there is in any of the others that I know carbonate village of Cromwell is a continuing care retirement community it's a faith based Christian community that allows residents to give up the burdens of homeownership but actually come and enjoy celebrating their life and focusing on doing things that they enjoy our residents are very friendly they're very neighborly and I feel that comes from our Christian faith as a foundation the residents are so engaged in the local camp on the campus but also in the local community because they really live with a purpose they want to give back they want to have a positive influence so covenant retirement communities really was birthed out of a vision from the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1886 and they opened the home of mercy and it was in the city in the city of Chicago covenant retirement communities today has grown to the 15 communities that it is and one of the commitments that was made many many years ago is that covenant retirement communities would have a retirement community in every Conference of the evangelical covenant church and so as individuals move in and they look at the financial security of that individual community while that's extremely important they also have the assurance that they have a backup from the larger organization in the event of access to funds to do new development or in the event that that community would be challenged financially they know that their investment in covenant retirement community this is safe it does benefit both residents and employees very well because it gives us financial strength crc luckily we have communities that are around the country and one part of the country might be experiencing changes in the marketplace versus others so we can actually ride the ebbs and flows of senior living better because we are such a large organization we also have the opportunity to share knowledge and resources and you know best practices and learn from each other so that we can stay more current we can actually have better opportunity to satisfy residents and just even staff understanding how either new techniques or new systems we can you know work and learn together versus having to figure it all out on their own coming up retirement communities purchase land from the children's home at the top of the hill so that in 1964 pilgrim and her health center actually was formed and then over time they were just doing the health center in 1977 the first independent living cottages 30 were built on the campus then from 1981 through 1984 the residential apartment buildings were constructed and as well as the Commons building 2001 our assisted living building was built where it connected the apartments to the health center and then in 2015 we actually converted some of those assisted living apartments to memory support apartments I'm also active in the community still as a as a volunteer at the hospital and at the artist for world peace and the community college but when I have completed those responsibilities then out I go into a wonderful community where I have a Oh a steady diet of exercise and friendships and places to go and books to read we know all our neighbors by name and we they recognize us and that's a good thing because when you move into a place where there's 260 units or whatever they can figure out one new person where you've got you know a lot more people to get to know we have a to me 350 residents total on the campus and about 230 employees working on the campus so you can drive 20 minutes north and hit Hartford which is the capital of the state and the surrounding areas so you have access to the great dining and shopping entertainment venues up there but then also you could go 30 or 40 minutes south and you're right along in the New Haven and the coastline what a blessing it is when we go off to Florida which we've done now for 14 years but this year for the first time we just locked that door the first day in January and headed off to Florida and I didn't worry a bit well I think of this place is a college for Aging and as in any college you have people that are sitting in their rooms and studying or doing meditating or doing whatever they're doing and then you have those various people who are in the library and then they will have those people are always getting up a new activity there are lots of field trip kind of things if you want to do that I go to the exercise classes for balance and for general keeping it together that goes to a creative arts on Tuesday because he does watercolors we go to the current events symposia maybe Thursday so inspired to serve enables our employees and empowers them actually to serve residents with those customer service moments and how each person individually wants to be serviced so as they get to know the residents they can help to service them best and again that helps to empower them I suppose my calling and ministry inspires me but to serve here it's the blast of knowing these people we have 400 residents for the most part I can learn from them and they can learn for me basically I've been here 13 years now the passion I get is going in doing a job for them just seeing the excitement on their face when they're completely stressed out over something that you know they can't figure out but we can take their mind and just ease it it's just a fulfilling well this is a second career for me I did do marketing and public relations for ten years and I never felt that it was fulfilling so when I went back for nursing and once I started doing it I really felt that I was doing my calling and I do feel that I'm helping maintain you know all of the residents health so that they can have a good long prosperous life the staff loves the residents they're very good to us we value them and they value us so it really makes work a pleasure to come to covenant village of Cromwell and it always has been and mostly because of the residents I would tell them to go out and look at everything else and then come back and they will know why we are so special I think the time to do it is when you can still enjoy it I think the time to come into the community to like this this is a time when when you can take advantage of everything there is to enjoy here [Music] I would say the culture centers around relationships that goes back to I think the whole Christian faith based component residents are really eager to have close relationships with each other with the staff with the local community [Music] you

[Music] you believe in the power of Christian community is really a summary statement of our full mission I have watched people who have come into our organization either as a resident or as a staff member who have not had an acid-based journey and because of their experience they've turned their lives over to Christ and that's the beauty of being a ministry of the evangelical covenant church I felt that we really grew to believe that this was the best move we could make at the time I felt like I belong right in the very beginning I knew people before I moved in here because of living in the area and the church here but I've made many new friends we had a tragedy in our family and we had an awful lot of love and support and caring from people here phone calls and cars and flowers and many things like that people really reached out people really appreciated loving caring spirit that's on the campus throughout staff and even other residents as they get to experience life that a covenant retirement community overwhelmingly people embrace that is really what makes a special and unique hospitality individuality congeniality and spirituality are really the core pieces of what build christian community and those are the areas where we put our focus covenant retirement Kunis is based upon the Christian principles and the fact that we're here not only living for ourselves but we're here living to help others we studying faith-based books interesting the background of people and how they contribute I found that a growing experience living here we're not living in the past but we're just actively improving our lives and their walk with God somebody might say what did your kids think about you coming here and I say I didn't ask them but they were very supportive of my coming here I feel coming here has been a gift to our four children they do not have to worry about us they're happy that we're here and that's a big bonus tres people come here to live age is completely irrelevant in looking back on life and seeing where God's direction was evidence maybe at the time I didn't see a great vision but now having come here I can look back that God hand was in it and it was the right thing for us it's about watching whether residents or staff blossom into something that they never thought was possible it's about the people that's why I love what I do you
