We've been married sixty-nine years. My name is Oyarma Tate. My name is Alene Tate and I've been at Asher for 21 years. We moved here when we were younger so that we could fully enjoy, be totally active in the community and we recommend that very very highly. Too many people wait too long so that when they get here they're sick or the spouse is ill. Being social is very important. There are a lot of companies coming up in the last 20 years they'd say about staying at home and that started playing to how you feel because you don't really want to change, but in fact, I think we live longer if we have this social life and when you stay in your own home even though you may have someone coming in to help you, they may not be there when you most need them or when the weather is bad, and your friends no longer drive, you no longer drive, we no longer drive but that has not been a social problem for us because we have all of this almost like a family situation here at Ashlar. When we walked into the entryway, the people who were there were playing something, and they stopped what they were doing, welcomed us, greeted us, and made us just feel like we were a part of them. They gave us the warmest welcome, which was sincere and very different from walking into a few others where it felt like you were walking into a hotel or something you know where everybody was sort of going their own way and you were standing there wondering what to do. Really what we were doing when we moved into a retirement community was changing our address and lifting the burden of property maintenance for us, lifting the worry of the children about us. We no longer have to worry about household maintenance. I don't cook anymore. Everything that we need is right here. The housekeeping people come and they come every other week and our children were pleased, it was like a gift to them because they had begun to worry about our going to the mailbox during the snowstorms, falling down the stairs or some such thing, or they weren't around, or we might get ill. And not only is it our home but our children, they treat it just like they used to treat the home when they were in North Haven. They come in and make themselves at home. We had Thanksgiving here this year we turned the table around the long way and we had 12 of us and we had fun. This lifestyle can add years to your life but it's not the number of years that it adds to your life, it's the life that it adds to your years.
