North Woods Village at Edison Lakes
Mishawaka, IN - Assisted Living, Memory Care
Community size: Large (26-100)
People with memory loss, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, have unique needs and challenges that require – and deserve – specialized care and support. Recognizing that these needs weren’t necessarily being met in other senior living environments, we created North Woods Village to offer a resident-centered, personalized approach to memory care assisted living.
Locally owned and operated, North Woods Village memory care assisted living communities are designed and developed solely for those with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other memory impairments. From the very design and décor of our communities, both interior and exterior, to specialized programming and our experienced and highly trained staff, delivering the finest quality of memory care is our only purpose.
We opened our first community in February, 2014. North Woods Village at Edison Lakes, located in Mishawaka, IN, was Michiana’s first stand alone, licensed memory care assisted living community. The response to this community has been so overwhelmingly positive, we knew we had created a level of care that families needed, appreciated and valued.
We can have the most forward-thinking, progressive programs in the world, but unless we have the right people to implement those programs, they mean nothing. At North Woods Village at Edison Lakes, we know that our staff is essential to delivering the care, the quality and the dignity our residents deserve. We have carefully selected only the most appropriate, qualified individuals to deliver care.
No two residents with memory impairment experience the same challenges, needs or symptoms. As such, "NEW DIRECTIONS"® is personalized, individualized and resident-centered. It's not a one-size-fits-all program. It is dynamic and fluid, able to change as our residents' needs change. Each person receives the ideal level of support he or she needs to live as independently as possible.
It all begins with the resident's life story.
Every relationship we have with a resident begins with learning his or her life story. Our staff talks with family members, asks questions and becomes very familiar with each individual's life - they learn about the family, the resident's profession, passions, and interests. What they loved to do, what inspired them, fulfilled them and made them happy. We carry that information in our heads and in our hearts, and it guides everything we do for that resident.
It all starts on day one! We begin each relationship with a new resident by learning his or her life story from family members. We discover who they really are, their joys, passions and interests. With that knowledge, we develop individualized programming that resonates with each resident.
With that information, we tailor our engaging activities and programs to each person's individual tastes, interests and abilities. As a result, our residents participate in treasured hobbies, pastimes and other pursuits that are not only pleasurable, but also provide our residents with fulfillment, self-confidence and pride. As an example, if one of our residents loved to bake, we will develop and implement baking activities. If another individual enjoyed woodworking, we will offer a woodworking activity. Again, these specialized programs will be designed to promote that care.
Our team is comprised of nurses (offering around-the-clock care with a nurse on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week) and experienced, professional caregivers and support personnel who have all been trained in memory care.
