(piano music) - Frank and I lived in many places and we helped a lot of people. I'm pound of that. I cherish the memories of our time in Africa and the Middle East and trekking our boys across Europe in a Volkswagen Bug. Those were some grand years. I wanted our boys to grow up in Michigan, connected to this community. There's a rhythm and a beauty to life here. Apple-picking in the fall, cross-country skiing in the winter, planting our garden each Memorial Day weekend. I was happy the day we returned. After Frank retired from teaching we traveled around a bit then found ourselves wanting to live closer to our boys and their families. We chose Heritage Community because it was easy for us to continue doing what we enjoyed. Evenings out at the theater, warm-hearted conversations at dinner with friends, planting my begonias each May. I've loved sharing my life here, meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends who now live a couple of doors down. When we learned of the onset of Frank's dementia, the staff brought support and comfort to that season of our lives. I felt the care of women in my knitting circle, gathering each week, reminiscing, sharing fits of laughter. And Frank so enjoyed the staff who dropped in for impromptu chats in our living room on days when he felt a little under the weather. "Oh, Frank," they would say, "I was just looking for you. I need your help." Frank's eyes would gleam again when he knew he could fix a problem. Before he passed, Frank asked me what Heritage Community meant to me. I told him about the times when I make cookies and run down to borrow a smidgen of brown sugar from the chef. I see that warmth and generosity everywhere at Heritage Community. I think that is why it's been such a perfect fit for us. Frank and I traveled all those years ago because we believed in helping others to enjoy better lives. [Music] I've lived in Kalamazoo all my life I was born here in Kalamazoo I've been here since 47 what does Kalamazoo mean to you whole well I think the opportunities some countless oh the music the the auditorium at Western civic we're so lucky everybody is friendly and nice they're ready always ready to help you any child that goes to school here can then go on to college without cost to them that's a perfect example of the kind of thing that has happened in different ways in Kalamazoo people with deep ruts that want to see that community go on and on that make it great heritage community of Kalamazoo started in the 1940s with a group of concerned citizens and people got together and sat at a table and said we really care about our older adults and we're gonna raise money we're going to have a home for them to live in and when they're here we'll never ask them to leave we'll have the resources to keep them here in their home heritage community is a very kind and loving place I felt immediately accepted for who I was and what I needed I love heritage community because life is good I never been so pampered my family is right here most of it and heritage community is so accepting of them it makes Kalamazoo even more comfortable for me [Music]
