Jerry Mogren, my father and a life-long Maplewood resident, dreamed of creating a beautiful, safe and affordable community for seniors. In 1993, I joined him in breaking ground on the Carefree Cottages of Maplewood, a 62+ rental community, offering independent and assisted living.
More than two decades later, the property continues to be owned and operated by the Mogrens. Our philosophy is simple: treat our residents as if they’re a part of the family. Seniors always deserve love and respect, and they’re entitled to live in a safe, beautiful place surrounded by an active community.
That’s what drives us at Carefree. Our 263-unit community offers a variety of housing—from completely independent living in a spacious, single-level cottage to assisted living in our Carefree Chateau, which includes care plans, meals and housekeeping. Our property is designed to grow with residents as their needs change.
Regardless of your plan, all residents may enjoy access to our vibrant community. Movie nights, bingo, celebratory luncheons, classes, library, plus fun planned outings and excursions.
No car? No problem! We specifically selected the Carefree location for convenience and access to neighborhood shopping and entertainment. Grocery stores, the bus stop, restaurants, churches, coffee shops and more are a quick and safe walk from the property.
Since the beginning, our family has always kept a senior’s budget in mind. More than 90 percent of our units qualify for federal affordable housing rental rates. Many of our residents say this is the nicest place they’ve ever lived, and nothing makes us more proud.
Our three-level Chateau offers 1-3 bedroom living featuring spacious kitchens, baths and closets, air conditioning, complimentary first-come-first-served surface lot parking and more. Garage space is available for a monthly fee. Some units include private balconies and walk-out patios, many with views of our onsite nature preserve.
Our stunning cottages offer 1-3 bedroom single-level living, complete with private porches, spacious kitchens and bathrooms, air conditioning and more. Cottages are pet-friendly (fees and restrictions apply), with options for in-unit laundry and an attached garage.
In 2015, Carefree launched its assisted living program, licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health. We provide three chef-prepared daily meals, 24-hour healthcare staff, and a variety of home health care services and activities.
Our property is located just west of White Bear Avenue behind Rainbow Foods, and is close to Maplewood Mall, grocery stores, restaurants, public transportation and healthcare.
Please note, our assisted care program is offered as an amenity for the Carefree Community and is not required to become a Carefree resident.
