The Carmelite System, a Catholic not-for-profit health system sponsored by the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, consists of senior care facilities that provide services to the aged and infirm.
Our member facilities are located in Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Dublin, Ireland where senior care services are provided, including skilled nursing, assisted living, independent living and post-acute care.
The Carmelite System, headquartered in Germantown, New York, focuses on system-wide coordination and collaboration to foster mission, improve quality and attain operational efficiencies. Services such as mission effectiveness, quality improvement, financial and business services, group purchasing, management of information services, strategic planning, public policy, and education are provided.
The mission of caring for the elderly began in 1929 when Mother Angeline McCrory founded the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. In 1999, the Sisters formed a non-profit corporation known as the Carmelite System for the Aged and Infirm, Inc., which was renamed The Carmelite System, Inc. in 2010.
The Carmelite System continues the work of serving the aged and infirm and to perpetuating the healing ministry of Jesus in long-term health care by providing benefits to and assisting facilities sponsored, co-sponsored and served by the Carmelite Sisters.
The Carmelite System adheres to the following values:
- Dignity - Respect each person as an individual, valuable member of the human community and as a unique expression of human life;
- Collegiality - Encourage all those in the System to share in the responsibility for and welfare of the whole organization by providing a forum for dialogue and discussion;
- Excellence - Foster personal and professional accountability, motivation, team work and commitment to quality;
- Collaboration - Build values-based partnerships based upon mutual relationships for the sake of proclaiming the Gospel by improving long-term health care in the community;
- Service - Provides for the needs of the aged and infirm.
The Carmelite Sisters came here in 1947, and we continue our ministry of medical and spiritual care for the elderly of the Columbus area.
The Villas at Saint Therese opened in 1999. Since then, we have cared for hundreds of older adults who were in that 'gray area' - those not needing skilled nursing care, but in need of a safe, supportive home.
Residents make their studio-style apartment their own, by furnishing it with their own familiar belongings. Their own bed, a favorite chair, cherished photos and collections.
Our apartments have a kitchenette with a microwave, refrigerator/freezer and kitchen-style cabinets and sink. The handicapped equipped bathrooms with a walk-in shower foster your independence, but staff is always available to assist you with your activities of daily living as needed.
The Carmelite System fosters the healing ministry of Christ in Catholic health care by proclaiming the value and dignity of the aged and infirm and providing collaborative ways to meet the needs of today’s elderly. A commitment to compassionate, loving care of the highest standards with wise stewardship of resources is the hallmark of programs and services rendered.
The Carmelite System will be a beacon of Catholic health care to the aged and infirm and to all those whose lives we touch. It will proclaim the value of life and the beauty and dignity of old age and will strive to maintain a leadership role in the shaping and delivery of services and programs of care for the elderly.
