Originally built in 1904, The Shawhan Hotel was one of Ohio's finest hotels.

Renovations began in 1996 to restore this gracious building. It was reopened in 1999 as an assisted living community. Purchased by Elmwood in 2001, it became Elmwood Assisted Living at The Shawhan, part of the Elmwood family of healthcare communities.

Once again an anchor of the downtown, our 53-suite / 66-bed assisted living community is warm and welcoming. Classic and timeless décor adorns the many living rooms, parlors, and libraries with fireplaces, perfect settings for visiting with family and friends. Residents and their guests may also enjoy elegant dining rooms, a solarium and court yard, ice cream parlor, chapel, beauty shoppe and community room.

Elmwood at The Shawhan is unlike most other assisted living facilities in many ways. The main feature that sets us apart is our 24-hour professional nursing, which provides peace of mind and reassurance to our residents and their families. Another is our Reminiscence Neighborhood, which is home to residents with Alzheimer's disease and other memory impairments. Exceptional care in gracious surroundings is what Elmwood is all about.

Licensed by the State of Ohio as a 53-suite / 66-bed Residential Care Facility, The Shawhan is a member of Assisted Living Federation of America, Ohio Assisted Living Association, and the Tiffin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Elmwood Assisted Living at The Shawhan offers numerous suite floor plan options. Each is tastefully appointed with wall-to-wall carpeting, twin bed with maple headboard and matching bedside stand, ivory damask draperies, wallpaper border, and linens for the bed and bath. A refrigerator, telephone, and cable access are also provided. Each style features a kitchenette, private bathroom with walk-in shower, closet area, individually controlled heating and air conditioning, a nurse call system and more. Most residents choose to personalize their new home. Pictures for the walls, favorite furnishings, and decorations can be brought in to create that comfortable and familiar feeling.

Three-Room Suite - Our most spacious suite offers three rooms and a bathroom. These rooms may be used in any fashion to accommodate sleeping and living space preferences. Affectionately referred to as our "Penthouse Suite," an abundance of closet space and large windows make this quite appealing for the discriminating individual or couple.

Studio Suite - Available in a number of configurations, this suite plan offers plenty of space devoted to the living and sleeping areas. Many large windows, kitchenette, private bathroom with walk-in-shower and generous closet space make this a wonderful option for an individual or couple.

Private Suite - sized appropriately for one person, this suite plan accommodates an individual quite nicely. Your favorite chair, dresser, and television will be right at home. Large windows, kitchenette, and private bathroom with walk-in shower make this ideal for you or a loved one.

Elmwood Assisted Living at The Shawhan is a residential living community which offers support with activities of daily living as well as medical monitoring, medication administration, and nursing supervision. Social and recreational programs, fine dining, housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance services are all a part of this exceptional residential community. A special neighborhood specifically designed to meet the needs of residents with Alzheimer's disease and other Dementia is also available.
