After negative experiences with his uncle and grandmother highlighted flaws in the assisted living industry, JB Gouger was determined to develop a living alternative for the elderly that is dedicated to their personal care without robbing them of their independence and life savings.
With the strong belief that people shouldn’t have to lose the comforts and self-sufficiency of home to get the personal care they need for their health and safety, JB earned a Master’s degree in Gerontology and opened the first Assisted Residential Retirement of Texas residence in 1994.
Now with four residences in Beeville, Gonzales, Kerrville and Uvalde, our mission is to create an affordable, home-like environment with a small number of residents and friendly caregivers that have the time and attention to devote to everyone.

Located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, 220 Harper is an assisted residential retirement community which serves seniors 65 and older in need of assisted living. Situated on two acres within a family-oriented neighborhood, our beautiful ranch style home provides care for a maximum of 16 people. Our small capacity allows for a higher resident to caregiver ratio and promotes independence for each resident within a dignified lifestyle.
At 220 Harper, each 425 square foot suite is personally furnished by every resident and offers a large private bathroom, sitting and bedroom areas. Cable is provided for each suite and private telephone and internet service is available.
Our caregivers and staff are dedicated to the care, comfort and wellbeing of every resident. In addition to wonderful social and recreational activities, we are an affordable care option for retirees in the Hill Country.
