The Mayflower is a familiar name and landmark in the historic section of Lexington, Virginia. Acquired by American Retirement Homes in 1984, this once grand hotel underwent renovations and refurbishing to transform into the assisted living residence that is home to our area seniors.
Visitors and residents are welcomed into The Mayflower by the covered front porch. The porch is a wonderful place to sip iced tea in the afternoon and watch the hustle and bustle of the day. Once inside the building, you feel as though you have stepped into the lobby of a hotel of yesteryear, not an assisted living building. Residents and their guests enjoy dining in a large beautiful dining area. The Mayflower boasts a sun-filled activity room on the main floor and a large activity area on the lower level.
Private and semi-private resident rooms and suites are on the first and second floor. All of the resident rooms and suites have lovely tall ceilings and windows with a private bathroom. Each room is equipped with a call bell system and the building is sprinklered. An elevator is located off of the main lobby to assist residents between floors so that they may easily go to the lower level beauty salon and activity area, dining room, or resident rooms. The Mayflower furnishes all of the rooms; however, residents may bring their own furnishings and provides all of the bath linens and bed linens for a twin size mattress.
The Mayflower team is there to assist the residents 24 hours per day and consists of a Licensed Practical Nurse, trained nurse aides, registered medication aides, activity director, dietary staff, and a maintenance director. The aides and the nurse assist with activities of daily living, (bathing, grooming, dressing, etc.) administering doctor ordered medications, assisting with ambulation and transferring and feeding when necessary. All of the staff are personally interviewed, have a Virginia criminal history background check, and references on file. The staff attends required continuing education through out the year. The Mayflower also has a consulting pharmacist and registered dietician to encompass all of the residents needs. Training is provided through in house sources, professional organizations and corporate meetings.
Three homemade meals a day are provided and snacks and beverages are available in between meals throughout the day. The Mayflower prides it's self on the outstanding activity program that has been created. The activity director plays a vital role in the lives of our residents. The Mayflower is very involved with outside volunteers who bring fun and companionship into the lives of our residents. Residents can participate in group activities such as The Red Hat Society meetings, exercise, weekly church meetings and outings. Friends and Family get togethers are held monthly and allow for families and residents to visit and spend time with the administrator.
The Mayflower offers seniors not only a place to live, but a place to call home in an active family-like setting. A visit to The Mayflower in the spring and summer months will grant smiling residents rocking on the front porch greeting each guest. As you walk in the front entrance and living area, our residents will be sure to wave or simply say hello. The friendly atmosphere at The Mayflower is second to none and is truly one of the best kept senior secrets in Rockbridge County. Here we are family, and we hope you will be apart of our family too.
