Since opening their doors in January 1900, Skaalen has been providing quality Christian care to the elderly of Stoughton and surrounding communities. Through the years, they have added and updated the services provided to meet the needs of a changing community. Today they provide services to over 750 individuals each year on their Stoughton and McFarland campuses. They continue to study the needs of the elderly in their communities as they plan for future development.

welcome back to talk of the town thanks for tuning back in if you're just joining us we've had some great topics already we're gonna talk a little bit about Scott retirement services and I think you're gonna learn a lot today because we are joined by the president and CEO of Scotland this is Chris Krantz thanks for being here thank you thank you for having me we appreciate you being here and I want to just get a little background information for viewers at home about Scotland retirement services and what you do okay Scotland is a private nonprofit located in Stoughton in mcFarland we provide housing and health care services for seniors organization has been around since about 1900 Rebecca and Germans Colin on County Road n constructed a facility dedicated to the care of 20 men and 20 women and we haven't looked back since so a lot of changes over the course of the years we've added a lot of different levels of care as the health care delivery system has changed over the years boy has it and you really need to be up with those changes to be able to service everybody appropriately let's talk a little bit about some of the service offerings and what you do sure in Stoughton we are on about a 120 acre campus we provide skilled nursing care assisted living and independent living we also have a therapy and wellness center and a warm water therapy pool for it for outpatients we also provide healthcare services as well 120 acre campus in Stoughton we also have an Independent Living campus in McFarland Wisconsin we 57 condominium units there as well wow that's a lot it's a lot to do and a lot of a lot of ground to cover now I've read that you're in the midst of a campus expansion project now why are you expanding well we did an analysis of our primary markets and and surveyed our stake holders our current residents future residents community members and we found that we had some holes within our continuum of care so basically we're looking at expanding our assisted living to more of a niche service so we've undertaken that not only for needs with our current community members our campus members but for our community in Stoughton as well wow that's great I think it's great when a business can take an internal look and you have to keep changing to kind of stay ahead of the curve in any industry but in this one certainly so a wonderful way to do that and now the first phase of the project is complete so let's talk a little bit more about the new memory care assisted living facility it's Magnolia gardens is that right yes yes it's correct so what we've done we undertook a renovation of our skilled nursing facility and consolidated floors so we have one open floor in our in our main building that we converted into a memory care assisted living which is Magnolia gardens we started construction last June finished up this spring we have 18 units of memory care assisted living it's in its own contained unit and exclusive so provides a safe environment for those who have Alzheimer's and dementia the early to middle stages we also have boast a nice enclosed courtyard so the seniors can have access to to the outdoors in a safe secure environment wow that's wonderful and now let's talk a little bit too before we go about the second phase of the project the second phase we're constructing a residential care apartment complex or an RCA C 33 units of that that's basically assisted living apartment style so we have a full kitchen multiple bedrooms different floor plans but you can move in fully independent and as you age in place if you experience some cognitive difficulties or physical difficulties you can purchase services ala carte as you need them so we'll have food and meal plans available assistance with bathing housekeeping laundry medication administration those types of things I love that idea because you know it's an opportunity to really be independent but it's not all or nothing you can sort of add things in as needs arise I wonder wonderful way to do that I'm sure there's viewers out there that want some more information for themselves or maybe aging parents where can they go for more info you can visit our website we have a lot of information regarding all of our levels of care and our different locations you can also see us on or you can call our main number and to schedule a tour for any one of our facilities in our various locations a great way to actually check out the facility itself so well Wow lots of infamy but she did great getting it all into a short timeframe this is Chris Krantz president and CEO of Scotland retirement services thanks for being here today thank you for having me we've got more talk of the town after the break stay right there

hi welcome to talk of the town we've got a great show for you today we're going to be checking in with the South Central Library System and you can find out what's going on at your local library but first it is and I just learned this it is national activity professionals week and we are joined by Michael Hecht and Pam Parsons from Scotland nursing and rehabilitation center welcome to the program both of you thank you thanks good to have you here so Pam I want to start with you what are the ranges of services that are offered at Scotland Scotland offers a big range of services we've been around since nineteen hundred at in stoughton and since then we've evolved into a full continuum of care campus so we have retirement condominiums in stoughton as well as in McFarland we have a rehab unit at skallon and take care of a lot of folks that come for rehabilitation from planned orthopedic surgeries and illnesses and unplanned things and they get better and go home we have assisted living right in our building s calendar there's always a nurse there and we have skilled care for people who need to call scale in their home very nice so you have a variety of different classes and it seems like you're growing as well yeah it was great so you are the director of leisure and support services can you give some examples of the programs that you offer we do a lot of different programming from individual programming to group outings we have a crafts group that meets and this is really individual and some of the projects that they work on I have brought with me yes I'd like to see example this is like a relief arter a batik that was done and it was done by one of our ladies who had to relearn how to do things so she was right hand dominant and now she has to do is her left hand for everything oh so she's done these things here as well as this one and this is with real leaves which she painted on and did some stamping perfect for fall and we frame it all up and she works with that and then we do a lot of repurposed art and so this right here is our repurpose art it's a just a wood box that we found in a shelf we added the knobs to it and one of our ladies spent time and with some help we glued it all in the bottom of the box and put in the grout for that so it's it's heavy so it works yes it is so that's some of the things that we do we also do reminiscing with music and we've started we're just getting going and the music and memory initiative program that the state of Wisconsin Department of Health Services is done we have very generous support from our community and we have the Bryant Foundation gave our department a huge gift and we're able to bring UW band and Bucky Badger to Scotland I have been doing that once year that's exciting we do a lot of seasonal events just like everybody celebrates seasons and Valentine's Day and Christmas and all that stuff we do that too very cool now Michael can you talk a little bit about the art and history programs that you have children it's gone we're really proud of that it seems that after a certain age communities forget that people over 75 can still keep learning and so what we do is make art and history accessible for instance upcoming st. John's Bible is at the chaser Museum so what we've done is we've have reproductions of some of the work and we'll play the music talk about the context the Middle Ages and then the elders from all over the campus of Scotland come and view it and of course we include doughnuts we also it makes a connection with dystopian community we have right now we have a current art exhibit in the store window of the Midwest bookstore downtown and what it does is that it makes an adult work it's not something busy it we can offer it to the resident they make it and they see it we take photos sometimes we bring them down for to look at it yes yeah so it sounds like you have a variety of integrated you kind of integrate variety of different arts and history and everything else and in what you do well that's fantastic well Michael and Pam unfortunately we're out of time this was such a great great discussion but we we have to wrap it up but thank you so much for joining us today check them out it's Colin com s kaa LEM hi Tom hey Scotland calm and it's Colin rehabilitation nursing and rehabilitation center thank you so much for coming on we'll be right back with more talk of the town thanks
