Knollwood, owned and funded by the Army Distaff Foundation, is a premier residential and healthcare community for retired military officers and their families. Founded for a benevolent purpose, the Army Distaff Foundation provides financial assistance to those in need, ensuring that no eligible person is denied residency. Since its inception in 1989, Knollwood has expanded to include four levels of care: independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, and the Special Care Center for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. For over a half a century, Knollwood continues to be the home of serving those who have served us.

at Knollwood retired military officers of all uniformed services and their female relatives have the opportunity to live with others who have experienced the unique life of the military family old friendships are renewed and new friends are discovered it is a community in which one instantly feels at home the Army distaff Foundation Inc was founded in 1959 to provide affordable secure retirement housing and healthcare services for army officers widows who at the time received minimal benefits from the government with the help of thousands of army wives around the world the foundation was able to open the Army distaff Hall in 1962 the name of the community was changed to no wood in 1989 when a mission was extended to all retired career military officers male and female from all uniformed services and their female relatives for 50 years no wood has been home to a unique group of patriotic Americans who understand sacrifice and pride as a continuing care retirement community no wood is home to approximately 300 residents in four distinct levels of care independent living assisted living skilled nursing care and a specialized community for those with dementia most residents live in independent apartments ranging from studios to contemporary two bedrooms with den and balcony nearly all of the apartments included washer and dryer complete kitchen emergency response system walk-in closets and choice of flooring and paint colors no wood residents share the comfort and camaraderie of living amongst people with similar military backgrounds while enjoying amenities like a full sized swimming pool jacuzzi an exercise room with equipment and a wellness clinic staffed by a nurse they also enjoy the luxury of an on-site convenience store full service beauty salon Chappell cafe and so much more plus you can visit the unsightly bury with reading rooms computers and large print books or relax in an overstuffed chair to read by the fireplace an abundance of common space including sun-filled lounges allows residents to expand their apartments and visit with their sociable well-traveled neighbors located on the concourse of Knollwood is the Gold Room a beautiful reception space used for private gatherings musical performances simulating lectures and cocktails before dinner just next door is the elegant caraway dining room where three meals are served each day as an alternative to this dining room a modern cafe is open all day for coffees soups sandwiches salads and more no wood sits atop 16 exquisite acres along Rock Creek Park in Northwest Washington DC close to Bethesda Maryland the location combines the best of both worlds the peaceful solitude of a country estate with the amenities and energy of our nation's capital just minutes away one of the timeless amenities offered at Knollwood is its lush park-like setting from the blooming campus to the beautifully landscaped walking trails to the secluded garden with private garden plots and Rock Creek Park right across the street residents with a green thumb can enjoy the serenity of Knowle woods outdoor setting in the courtyard there is a serene cutting green and walking paths residents can be seen soaking in the Sun or resting under umbrellas on the patio while saying hi to others walking their dog on a nice day also located on the grounds is the original estate mansion called Knoll house which is the perfect place to host private parties social gatherings and meetings family and friends are welcome to stay in one of the four beautifully appointed guest rooms two of which are in no house with the vibrant Washington DC at its fingertips no one has two buses used solely for the transport of residents to local events performances shopping commissaries post exchanges public grocery stores Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and more for all other transportation needs a public Metro bus stops at no woods front door every half-hour and connects to the local subway station as one resident says life at Knollwood is easy to this day the army distaff foundation has not lost sight of its original mission of providing affordable secure retirement housing and health care services to those who have served and supported our military regardless of their financial resources no wood continues to carry out this vision today and into the future
