Hale Kūʻike Bayside is a sensational assisted living community in Kaneohe, Hawaii. It is within scenic Honolulu County which is part of the Aloha State.
In Native Hawaiian, “Hale” means “house” and “Kūʻike” means “to understand.” Hale Kūʻike or “house of understanding” reflects our mission to provide the highest level of care for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia-related illnesses.
Hale Kūʻike Bayside’s innovative two-story design creates small neighborhoods of residents that allow for a family home environment. Each floor has its own dining room and country kitchen. It’s been said that the kitchen is the heart of every home, and so it is at Hale Kūʻike Bayside. Our residents love to gather in the kitchen to share food and stories.
Each floor has a secure walking path with a covered lanai for the residents to sit and enjoy the sunshine and views of the lush gardens, the mountains, and Kaneohe Bay.
Every design element at Hale Kūʻike has a purpose. Best practices in design philosophies from Scandinavia and around the world have been researched, tested and incorporated to create an environment that is healthy, calming and supportive.
Our philosophy is to find joy in all that we do and bring the zest of life into each day. Planned activities are led daily by our activity professionals starting after breakfast and through dinner time, following the natural rhythms of the day.
We strive to have a balance of productive, leisure, wellness, and rest and restoration activities. Even familiar “living activities” such as folding laundry and cooking provide opportunities for success by targeting remaining abilities.
We believe that food feeds the soul. A well-prepared meal provides joy in times of celebration, comfort in times of anxiety, and promotes good cheer around the table. This is important for people with dementia, who truly live in the moment.
Our chefs create each meal from scratch with fresh ingredients, balancing flavor with the special dietary and nutritional needs of our residents. Menu items reflect the meals residents may have enjoyed while growing up. These include Asian dishes, local favorites, and traditional comfort foods.
There’s no better place to be on a bright day, than outdoors admiring the beauty of Hawaii. Hale Kūʻike’s landscape is designed to bring the wonder of our tropical island to residents.
Within our secure gated area, residents are free to roam the lush gardens, soak in the Hawaiian sunshine and smell the flowers. Numerous design elements throughout the gardens help stimulate conversations and orient residents. Seating is provided throughout for quiet reflection, reading or socializing.
Circular garden paths provide continuity, an important element for those living with dementia. And since safety is always our top priority, paths have also been tested to make sure their slopes are gentle enough for residents with mobility issues.
With Hale Kūʻike’s highly trained staff, this is round-the-clock care you can count on. Nursing Assistants provide overnight care and monitoring, while our Registered Nurses are onsite during the day and available on-call after hours.
To deliver the finest in memory care, we adhere to the Positive Approach® to Care (PAC) training curriculum. Our Certified PAC Trainers, PAC Coaches and Engagement Leaders, all work together to provide on-going, hands-on dementia education and skill-building for staff members in all departments.
Each staff member is trained to understand the experience of memory loss and to focus on residents’ strengths. By building strong, lasting relationships with each resident, we can create personalized solutions that serve our residents best.
