Hear from Blanche and her two daughters about independent living at Porter Hills Village.
Transcript:
we did a lot of comparison shopping around town and we came to the conclusion that really Porter Hills offered the best quality for the money involved and then of course our daughters live on this side of town so that was maybe the crowning touch to it all but we would have made that decision I think even if they didn't live quite so close we can sell and it is proved to be a wonderful experience it hasn't disappointed us one bit I just felt pretty good about it you know we could see that in their own home some things were getting to be difficult yard care snow shoveling those kinds of things and we knew that that was going to be a relief for them so what was best for them was also best for us I think they found a real sense of community here particularly since my father got ill after they moved in and that was such a good good move for them to have come before that all happened and and since then my mom has just found so much to do here there's there's always something going on so I think that's been a really good place for her so I love being here I feel Porter Hills tries really hard to meet your every need and the one thing I like especially about it is people think about it you can eliminate one whole move instead of going from your home to a condo just go from your home to hear because the independent living is just really like kind of living with perks sometimes I come and we'll go down to the little cafe for lunch together and whenever we walk through the halls it so vile because she knows everyone and so we have to stop and chat a little bit and and she really cares for the people here and they care about her and it's really nice to see and she's always stabbing at somebody's door oh I have to check in on this person or this person I have to remember to bring them to choir with me and we go on the elevator and there are all sorts of notices up for things that are coming socialist she's telling me about the book study that she's going to or the concert or whatever is going on there is always something happening you're still living independently you can be as independent as you choose to be I go to the lecture series that they have on Monday and Friday mornings keeps our minds on top of things and that's enjoyable we have the porter Hill sayers that we enjoy that Joanne is our leader and she's such a ball of fire nobody ever comes to see if they want to be in four hills and doesn't come back she hooks them right away it is just so much fun being with a nice group of people who also like to sing and don't have to be a special kind of sandwich just people getting together who likes to do things they provide transportation for the civic theatre and for the concerts and then of course at artprize couple buses always go down the artprize and its pretty long time they let us get off and go through the exhibits and things are they stay on top of things and try to provide all of these things that we want to do and see they're on top of that we have some good activity directors sometimes I have a hard time finding a time to get together with her because she's got this or that or exercise class or a restaurant to go to so I wasn't I don't think I expected that much busyness but she's enjoying it I think my mom gets out in about two things more than I do because she in the last couple weeks she had been to the symphony and she had been to a concert and she had been to a movie and out to lunch with a lecture and you know it just went out not wonderful first of all I have to tell you I think Porter Hills is a magnet from nice people including staff and people who live here we talked about this so often everybody greets you in the hall with a smile the staff never will pass you in the hall without saying hello and it's it's just delightful to be in that kind of an atmosphere oh very carefree extremely carefree you can do as much as you want or as little as you want for instance last Sunday I had all the grandchildren that live in grand rapids here for a pool party was a birthday for one the fun we had in a pool and then we had access to a room we could have refreshments and all that was all portal thing do this use us I didn't pay any money to use these facilities and have this good time it's wonderful there is of course a full health care staff on 24-hour duty around the clock here all the time there is a doctor aunt on campus and the wonderful thing about knowing too is if someone you love has to go to full care you don't have to step one foot out the door to go visit that person nor get in a car to visit that person and that's a wonderful blessing and has proved to be a blessing to many people I know personally it's all on this campus I would say it's always a hard transition when you're moving from your home into a retirement community but Porter Hills does a great job of helping with that transition and I feel so much better that my mom is here that she has friends she has activities she has a lot of support just day to day that you might not have if you were still living by yourself in your own home and I think that's for me as her daughter that makes me feel really good it makes me feel happy that she has that looking back it fulfilled anything that I could have wanted there were no blank areas that I thought oh that would have been nice if they could have done that there just isn't that thing there is no blank they have gone out of their way to provide every need that we want it was like kind of living but it's kind of living with almost living in a park people love that the apartment they come into my apartment oh it's so big and two bathrooms and they are just amazed at the space that I have you can have family here and not be crowded into one little area you can go out and play in the yard or even fish and catch and release that my grandchildren have done with such fun and there is just so much to offer here as a matter of fact my oldest daughter who lives in Virginia right now is on the list to come here and she did a lot of shopping too and she said nothing we saw east compares with the quality of Porter Hills or with the financial offering apart Hills so she'll be here when the apartment comes available that is the ones they picked out she still had a lot of joy in life um she's excited to do different things she's still learning she's still growing and I hope I'm like that when I'm 90 you

I usually refer the people who work here is her angels because they they take care of them of her like she was their mother which I really appreciate you know you can tell you can feel the warmth and he can feel the caring from them and that makes all the difference in the world to me it's just it's just a warm happy feeling here well I think my favorite activity would be doing the exercises usually it's in the morning and I guess she started I really like that get acquainted with the people and everybody's friendly the caretakers hmm the staff everybody is friendly that makes you feel good to them I think Meadowlark especially when you walk in you feel like you're a part of it I often joke with people if you want to come back and be a part of the show please come back because when you walk in you have a chance to enjoy the family atmosphere enjoy some of the activities that are going on and be a part of them you almost feel like you want to stay and not miss something because there's something happening right around the corner that interest you really when we started this project we knew that it wanted we wanted it to be much more than just the aesthetics in the building we wanted to completely redo the model in which we deliver care and we wanted to institute a household model which really puts the elders at the center of everything we do so from a design perspective we knew that it was going to be very important to build a physical environment that would support the household model just like you would have at your home you have rooms that surround your central living area so your kitchen your dining room there's no longer a break room so our staff are really a part of our elders everyday lives we also wanted to make sure that we had kitchen environments that would allow our care partners and our elders to cook together so if they wanted to have a snack in the middle of the afternoon they could access our pantry no longer were we gonna have that behind those doors or kitchens and accessible because we needed to build this environment so that every time you walked out of your room you felt like you walked into your home in your typical household you most of your activity might have taken place in the kitchen or in the dining room or in the family room and then everyone went their separate ways well here it's no different we have the hub of the activity being the kitchen the dining room the family room in each one of these households at Meadowlark so their apartment can be their own space but yet when they walk out of it they still have those natural elements that they've been used to their whole lives this is a family oriented environment here where the staff and the residents have really bond with each other getting to know each other and I've had the pleasure of of caring for three different generations touching those lives and right now we have a gentleman in his life they have just moved in and I cared for his mother and father and also her mother Meadowlark is in a small town small community the elders that live here were born and raised in this community we provide deep-rooted love care and concern for everyone that lives here and also everyone that works here that's what sets Meadowlark apart from the other care communities in this area we all want the ability to make our own decisions so we as an industry need to start bending to that and start building models that can support that because it's very important no matter what stage of your life that you're in that you can direct your choices because our elders they still have a lot of learning to do they have a lot of goals and really we're here to support them and whatever that means for them individually you [Music]
