The Thanksgiving Hospital opened in 1868; its name expressed a widely-felt gratitude for the end of the Civil War. Over time the patient care facilities of the Thanksgiving Hospital were transferred to what is now Bassett Healthcare and in 1928 The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home became a retirement home, now licensed by the New York State Department of Health.
