Transcript:
Kendal at Oberlin is a continuing care retirement community. People predominantly begin their life at Kendal in independent living, living in a cottage or an apartment. And then, should there be changes and needs, we have other levels of care with our skilled nursing center and our assisted living. One of the things that I think attracts people to a Kendal community is the fact that they can be engaged with the larger community. We've been tracking this over the years and at the current time there are over 85 different agencies that receive the benefit of our Kendal volunteers. The hours have continued to go up and are now representing over 40,000 volunteer hours a year. They become very involved with the schools. They may serve on city council, they may be a part of the college, whether it be teaching, continuing to do research. It may mean being a part of the college audiences for many of the music programs. They care about the larger community and they want to be a part of it. The conservatory and the music was probably the biggest draw to us. There's a couple of contemporary music organizations that were founded here, that we've been following for years. And that really got us thinking about Oberlin as a place where there are interesting things going on. I'm still amazed when we go to concerts. The caliber of students, and their musicality and their ability to perform is tremendous. The college is welcoming to everyone in Oberlin, whether you audit a class or attend a concert or go into the library. Anybody in Oberlin who's over 65 can audit classes at the college for no fee at all. In fact, you don't even have to register. All you've got to do is contact the professor and get permission to take the class. The difference that we have here is that multigenerational kind of thing. And it's not retiring to some enclave of only old people, but it's really a vibrant community because of all the activity of the multiple generations. So if you're thinking about retirement living and you're looking for a place with fine music, opportunities for lifelong learning and community involvement, we hope you'll come and join us at Kendal at Oberlin. Welcome to Kendal at Oberlin. We'd love to get to know you and welcome you any time to visit with us.

this is a community that is concerned about their residents while it's great to have other levels of care such as our nursing home or assisted living we're putting the emphasis when people are still living in their homes and their cottages to remain well the way residents are able to really pursue their interests are to really look at the wide range of activities offered residents can select or actually contribute to any range of activities that really engage themselves with others or draw other residents in it's really a complete set of choices for what fits three individual a lot of what goes on at kendall has to do with what the residents are involved in what they like I teach a strength and conditioning class tap class I do a sitting strong which is a chair class we've got Tai Chi we've got yoga we also have our aquatic programs the one that I really really like is the resonant run exercise class in the auditorium Monday Wednesday Friday 45 to 9 45 sometimes as many as 25 of us that go to that so I really appreciate that a big huge thing that we focused on in our classes is not necessarily the fact that we're doing physical activity but that it's socialization we talk and do things at the same time you know we're very laid back and it's not competition it's getting out and being active having fun doing it it doesn't necessarily mean exercise has to be grueling it can be fun and it can be enjoyable I want to continue staying as well as possible and I try to stay as fit as possible I have this is a very strong belief that we should try to do what we can do but do something whether it's from the least amount of activity to the most whatever we're comfortable doing and try to keep that up even if they don't want to do a class they can come and use the pool we've got tennis courts we've got a bocce court we've got the croquet they can walk the perimeter they can bite the perimeter there's so many things that they can do i do most of things a lot of things on my own I swim every day try to smile every day I don't think I've ever seen a retirement community with a cool like this is really really wonderful yesterday I got up and walked with perimeter pass a mile then I wrote five miles around the road with a wonderful perimeter path is that's so nice it's so safe there's no traffic you ride your bike distant traffic even if you want to go downtown or anything you can ride your bike without too much trouble so it's a very nice community have to fight cars and other obstacles we have a group of residents that for years and years have participated in a special exercise class at the college they're really integrated into the community this way and that is important to that group of people so the resources not only offered by kindle here on campus with our hundred acres but also what's a compliment in the larger community when you do exercise it's pretty much the same page for everyone to just get that 30 minutes in you can do 10 minutes here 10 minutes here 10 minutes here just to do what makes you happy and that it doesn't have to be a chore and just to keep moving and stay active it's the best thing to do let's stay well let's take on those activities that really promote good building and healthy living

Kendal at Oberlin residents Larry and Arlene talk about their decision process in choosing a continuing care retirement community.
Transcript:
yeah you know people well especially friends and family and such who who heard what we were going to do and we talked with many of them well in advance I about this and many people had that kind of reaction like how can you possibly be old enough to do that and i think that the you know as we came to understand the cultural vibrancy of the community it was really compelling to be here even if we were just moved to town and you know buy a house or rent an apartment or something but there didn't seem to be any reason to do that rather than moving to Kendall in you know in terms of the long term arrangements at Kendall and you know I think it's there is so much to do here you know we could keep ourselves endlessly busy in fact we are and that was really what what made it compelling sort of regardless of age we didn't ultimately we originally were thinking how maybe we do it in five years or basis at 1007 and it was five and you know but it started to line itself up that it was right that there was the opportunity to do it now and we couldn't come up with a reason not to do it now because it's where we want it to be and we couldn't figure out why would we wait you know I think another thing to consider is that the earlier you get to a place like Kendall the quicker you start to make friends there and build a community and feel a part of a community and build a community of support when it comes to the time when you might need some help you wouldn't want to come I wouldn't want to come on the verge of needing help and I don't know anybody here so there I think it's it's important for people to think about coming a little earlier rather than a little later so one thing we said to ourselves was the only real mistake we could make about timing would be to be too late it were too late would be too late to to be able to live here independently which changes the whole dynamic of how whether it's candle or anywhere else you know how your life is is going to be is very different if your first step is to move into assisted living you you
